Not much is different today than yesterday when it comes to the logic behind this play. Los Angeles still has the best record in the National League (91-60), and the Nats still have the worst record in all of baseball (51-99). L.A. has won 10 of its last 13 games (5-2 on the road) – boosting its division lead to five games over Colorado – and the offense exploded in those 10 wins, scoring a total of 77 runs (7.7 per game), with eight of the victories coming by multiple runs.

On the other hand, since a strong run in August when they won eight in a row and 11 of 14, the Nationals have reverted to, well, being the Nationals. Since Aug. 18, they’re 8-24, including 3-11 in their home ballpark. And 18 of Washington’s last 22 defeats have been by more than one run. Also, the Nationals have lost 13 of their last 18 games to Los Angeles.

As for this pitching matchup, the Dodgers’ Chad Billingsley goes up against Ross Detwiler. Billingsley definitely hit a wall in the second half of the season, which caused L.A. to skip his last turn in the rotation (Billingsley hasn’t pitched since Sept. 13). Still, the guy has one of the most live arms in baseball, and despite not being at the top of his game, he’s still allowed four runs or fewer in eight straight starts. Also, in three career starts against Washington (one each of the last three seasons), Billingsley has given up a total of six runs and 17 hits in 20 2/3 innings (2.61 ERA), with the Dodgers winning all three games.

What about Detwiler? Here’s all you need to know: He’s 0-6 with a 5.80 ERA overall, he’s got an 8.83 ERA in his last four outings and Washington is 1-10 in his 11 starts this year. Enough said. Lay the 1½ runs with L.A.
