I’m looking for another under in Friday night’s Washington-Atlanta matchup. These teams just met Wednesday in Washington, and the Hawks came away with a 120-105 victory. The 225 combined points stayed comfortably below the closing total of 230½, and the game gives us another indication that these teams can play below the market number.
The recent series history also favors this play: three
consecutive meetings have stayed under, as have four of the last six games
between these Eastern Conference rivals.
Washington brings an impressive under trend into the
rematch. The Wizards have stayed under in five straight games and six of their
last seven, and they are 4-0 in its last four road games. The offensive numbers
also support a lower-scoring game. Washington is averaging just 108.9 points
per contest, and the Wizards have shown they can make opponents work for their
points. Atlanta is averaging 115.8 points, but the Hawks have also had
difficulty consistently producing enough offense to push games over the number.
Atlanta also enters with their last four games landing under. The important factor is that Wednesday's game was already played at a pace and scoring level that finished below the market expectation, and Friday's rematch comes with the same two teams facing each other again just two days later.
I also like the fact that the recent head-to-head results and Washington's season-long trend point in the same direction. I’ll take Washington and Atlanta to stay under the posted total Friday night.
